Part 129: Monitor hotel wifi quality with Zabbix

What's up, home? part 129 cover image

Zabbix Summit 2025 is almost here and this is just a quick note about what I am going to do.

Traditionally I have not brought my main laptop to summit, but an old Dell, and even that has been running with QubesOS. This year, I'm going to bring the very same laptop, but this time with an almost normal operating system -- FreeBSD 14.3. FreeBSD used to suffer from lacking wifi drivers, but FreeBSD 14.3 significantly improved Intel iwlwifi driver and it now supports the latest and greatest standards, so it should be ok.

Apart from normal stuff what I usually do with my laptop is that this year I will attempt to monitor the quality of the hotel wifi with my laptop. For that, my beloved FreeBSD already has a Zabbix server up and running, and before the summit I will add at least the following tests to it:

  • Ping test measuring ping to google.com
  • Wifi signal strength (parse output of ifconfig wlan0 list sta)
  • Browser test testing this blog, or if Selenium does not work well with FreeBSD, then just a web scenario

Results will then be posted soon after the summit. Wish me luck.
