Part 134: Use Zabbix to observe when kid wakes up

What's up, home part 134 cover image

Let's get back to the roots of this blog for a moment -- to monitor what's happening in our home.

To fully understand what's happening in this blog post, I'll explain the morning routine of our 3+ year girl.

Over the past few weeks, when she wakes up some time after 06:00 before us, she comes out from her room and turns on our living room ceiling light from the wall switch. That light of course is an IoT light bulb, a Philips Hue, so I get to graph that nicely with Zabbix.

Let there be light, or don't

I have monitored the lights and other home stuff since the very beginning of this blog, from 2022. Before the kid started to reach and like to use the wall switch, we rarely touched the button as our Cozify can turn multiple lights on and off at the same time with the scene we want. Using the traditional wall switch will actually cut the connection to Philips Hue light, as it will then be completely out of power.

This new fact -- "power outage" -- is what I use to figure out how early or late our girl woke up on any given morning. When the wall switch is on, the light is reachable, if it's off, the light is not reachable (duh).

See it from Problems history

I also have triggers set for the light. No, I dont' get any alerting to my e-mail or other places, merely a mention to Zabbix Problems view. But this gathered information can be very useful, as from the trigger history it is easy to see when kid has turned on the living room lights in the morning. Like clockwork, she wakes up 6:xx in the morning. Here's an event list shown by monZphere's excellent Problem Analysis Zabbix module.

Alert history

So, this way I can see if our little one is drifting towards earlier or later wakeups. This will be fascinating data over time.
