DOOM! DOOM! DOOM! Play Doom inside Zabbix! My this years' talk "Widgets Gone Wild" in Zabbix Summit 2026 covered how with weird mind and help of LLMs one can create the weirdest Zabbix custom widgets. One of them is Zabbix Doom, where you can play Doom inside Zabbix and by shooting at the enemies you will then acknowledge a random Zabbix alert.
During summit I got so many questions about this and so many requests that could I please release the widget for everybody, so here we go. Zabbix CEO Alexei said to me that apparently Zabbix is now also a gaming platform. :D
How I made it?
Well, almost nothing from MY side – it was Claude Code which made all this possible. During my morning coffee, I told it “Hey, you have developed me few custom Zabbix 7.0+ widgets in the past very well. Now let's continue that route, I want to run Doom inside Zabbix in a way that when I shoot at enemies, it should then acknowledge an alert inside Zabbix. Each enemy represents one active unacknowledged problem.”
The first iteration led to this Doom-like, not actual Doom – I left it in place, as even though it is not pretty, it can be more hectic than the original Doom, as if your Zabbix has lots of unacknowledged problems, you will be represented with MANY simultaneous enemies. Good luck with them.
Next I told Claude that hey, this is cool and all, but I really want the real Doom. Claude went and found some Doom ports suitable for this use case, more about those in my GitHub.
Rest was just some back-and-forth chatting as naturally when doing something this weird, there can and will be gotchas. This thing can and will still be buggy, but hey, for a proof-of-concept it's very nice already.
Does it really work?
Oh yes it does. After playing the game, just check the Problems view
Where can I get it?
Download it from my GitHub and install it just like any other Zabbix module. You then have a new widget available, so drop it anywhere in your Zabbix you'd like to. This was tested and developed with Zabbix 8.0 pre-release versions.
Now, go make it your default landing page on Zabbix. Or not.
